In the first full episode of The Box, host Addison Gilmore shares a journal entry detailing a man’s strange visit to St. Louis in the summer of 1971 after reports of dozens of missing children and inexplicable events at the home of Carl Ferguson surfaced. As she digs beneath the surface of the tale, she finds a lot more than she expected.

    I was waiting for you to get to Beelzebub out of all that. Lord of the flies, and all. Baal tends to get used a lot for demonic names for whatever reason. I think because Ba’al meant “Lord” in the context of certain ancient near-eastern gods. Ba’al Adam, for instance, or even just plain Ba’al like the golden calf worshiped by the Jews while Moses was on the mountaintop. Pretty much just an untranslated part, and it all comes back to Lord of the Flies being taken as Beelzebub.

    The really interesting part here is that this particular form of memory loss isn’t seen again in later stories. Even the operative realizes at one point that this thing messed with its head enough to get it into a vulnerable position.
